Seven Steps In Measuring Your Feet
It would really save you the hassle if you simply tell the sales attendant your shoe size. If the pair doesn't fit, you can simply either ask for a bigger or smaller size. This is also important especially if you are buying a pair of shoes for a kid who unfortunately cannot come along while you go shopping. But you must remember that when measuring shoe size, it has to be as accurate as possible so here are the basic steps.
1. Find a flat area. This will allow you to easily draw the line around your foot. The cleaner the line, the easier is it for you to measure. You see if there are multiple lines drawn on the paper you will end up confused as to which line you should follow. Multiple lines are usually results of an uneven surface. So to avoid confusion find first a flat surface.
2. Gather your materials. Basically when you measure your foot you don't really need a lot of items. All you need is a pen or pencil, a sheet of paper that is long enough to accommodate your foot, a tape measure, a sock and a tape to secure the paper. Gathering these materials before you start outlining your foot will save you time and it will also keep you from repeating the outline because you moved your foot.
3. Tape the paper. This will secure the paper unto the floor so you won't have to worry about it getting crumpled. With the paper securely taped to the floor, you can now smoothly outline your foot.
4. Outlining. First wear your sock on the left foot. Measuring your foot with the socks on will help you provide the allowance you need. The left foot is usually the one being measured simply because this is bigger than the right. If you use the right, you might end up buying a pair that is too small for your left foot and you will feel uncomfortable.
Once done, put your foot firmly at the center of the paper. Make sure there is enough space between the edges of the paper and your foot. When tracing, keep the pencil or pen perpendicular to the paper or in an upright position and avoid holding it at an angle. Make sure that the pen or pencil is against your foot the whole time you are tracing it. If you find that hard to do, you can always ask someone to do the tracing for you.
5. Straight lines. Once you are done with the tracing, draw straight lines on the outermost area or points of your foot like the top and bottom part and also the sides. The straight lines will serve as your guide in measuring the various areas of your foot.
6. Measuring. To measure the length of your foot, position the tape on the straight line drawn across the top of your foot and extend the tape down the straight line drawn across the bottom part of the foot. Keep the tape straight and line the points of the tape to the straight line. Avoid rounding the digits. To measure the width, do the same thing as you did with the length only this time, measure the sides of your foot.
7. Finding the shoe size. Once you have the measurements, you can now use it to find your shoe size. There are shoe size charts available so compare your measurements to the ones that are given on the chart.
